Blending Traditions and Roles: A Personal Reflection on Identity

In this post, I will explore the ways my cultural heritage has shaped my values and behaviors, reflect on my experiences as a woman, and consider how these elements intertwine to shape my self-awareness and relationships.

Culture

Growing up in the "Land of Enchantment," my cultural identity is deeply rooted in the vibrant traditions of my New Mexican heritage. As a Latina, family, faith, and community have always been central to my life. One vivid memory that highlights the impact of culture on my worldview is the celebration of Día de los Muertos. The colorful altars, adorned with marigolds, candles, and photos of loved ones who passed away, taught me to honor my ancestors and embrace life’s impermanence. This tradition took on a profoundly personal meaning after the loss of my daughter, Isabella Marie, at just 2 months old.

As a young mother of only 18, I had carried her for 9 months and experienced a healthy delivery, only to have her sudden passing shatter my foundation. The pain of her loss challenged me in ways I never anticipated. However, the celebration of Día de los Muertos became a source of healing. It provided a sacred space to honor Isabella’s brief but impactful life, allowing me to reflect on the love and strength her memory instilled in me. This tradition continues to guide my gratitude for family connections and reinforces my commitment to cherishing life’s fleeting beauty.

Through these traditions, I have learned to value resilience, creativity, and the importance of storytelling. These lessons influence how I approach challenges and build relationships. My culture has also shaped my passion for working with people and animals, as both reflect the interconnectedness and respect for life that I’ve grown up valuing.

Gender

As a woman, navigating societal expectations and gender roles has been both challenging and empowering. One experience that stands out is pursuing a career in creative media technology, a field traditionally dominated by men. At times, I felt the need to work harder to prove my capabilities. However, these challenges strengthened my confidence and resilience, reminding me of the importance of advocating for myself and others.

Being a mother and stepmother has further deepened my understanding of gender roles and societal norms. Embracing these roles has given me a new perspective on the importance of nurturing while challenging outdated gender expectations. My identity as a woman has been a source of pride, shaping my empathy and influencing how I navigate personal and professional relationships. Through this journey, I’ve learned to fully embrace my femininity and unique way of storytelling, finding grace and strength in womanhood. This truth is beautifully reflected in biblical expressions, such as the wisdom and leadership of Deborah in Judges 4 and the virtues of a Proverbs 31 woman, which continue to inspire and guide me.

Blending my passion for creative media and my studies in therapy has opened up exciting possibilities for meaningful work. Through visual storytelling and digital media, I can create content that fosters healing, connection, and self-discovery. Whether it’s producing videos that highlight mental health journeys or developing resources to support families, this integration allows me to combine artistry with compassion. By leveraging creative tools, I hope to inspire others to navigate their own challenges and embrace growth, blending creativity and therapy to make a lasting impact.

Interconnections Between Culture and Gender

As a Latina woman, I have faced both advantages, such as strong support, and challenges, including societal stereotypes. These experiences have strengthened my interpersonal relationships, teaching me to value diverse perspectives and approach others with compassion. They have also deepened my self-awareness, helping me recognize the interconnectedness of identity and the importance of creating inclusive spaces.

Culture and gender has given me a greater appreciation for the values and experiences that have shaped me. This process has highlighted the importance of embracing my unique identity while remaining open to growth and understanding. Moving forward, I hope to use these insights to foster meaningful connections, advocate for equality, and inspire others through my journey. This reflection has been a reminder that our identities are not static but a dynamic blend of influences that guide us toward becoming our truest selves.

In addition, I find great inspiration in the biblical partnership of Adam and Eve, which beautifully symbolizes the complementary roles of man and woman. Their story reminds me of the strength and balance that come from working together, each bringing unique qualities to the relationship. Leaning on my partner has been a source of encouragement and empowerment, highlighting the beauty of collaboration and shared purpose. Our partnership, rooted in mutual respect and support, continues to teach me the value of unity and the powerful work that can be accomplished when we embrace our God-given roles and strengths together.
